As they walked across the ranch yard toward the big house, SAC Sara Caruthers looked at Lazarus. “My boss, the deputy director of the FBI, told me to have you call him, and to stand by with a weapon. He doesn’t like what you’ve done, nor does he like what he knows of Section 7.”

Lazarus sighed. “I understand, and that’s okay. We deal with that all the time, but for your sake, I’ll talk to him.”

A few minutes later she dialed in to her offices and was put directly through to FBI Deputy Director Samston.

“Agent Caruthers, good. Do you have that man from Section 7 with you?”

“I do, sir. You’re on speaker and he’s right here.”

She could feel Lazarus drawing away, though he hadn’t moved. The bleak loneliness that was a part of his world seeped from him.

Samston spoke gruffly, “I hear, Mr. Lazarus, that you have been impersonating a federal agent.”

“No. There is no impersonation involved. I am a federal agent.”

“Yet you work for an agency that most people have never heard of, and those of us who have heard of it, call a myth.”

“That’s fair enough.”

“And that agency, and the director’s office, are not even listed in the federal registry.”

Lazarus’ voice was sharp as a whip, “Cut to the chase, Samston. There’s a madman with degrees from the best engineering school in the world who has built dozens of massively explosive devices. At least some of those are upgrades of the Scorpion Stinger missiles. Hundreds of people have already been killed in at least three locations. We have former workers of his in custody who are witness to him committing the murder of at least nine or ten right here this morning. Those explosives seem to have been scattered across the globe, and frankly, I don’t have time for this.”

“I cannot even verify who you are.”

“I work for Section 7 and my working name is Smith, Lazarus Smith. Call the secretary of defense or the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, or even the president. My boss reports directly to the president and oversight comes from the secretary and the chairman.”

“A good story, but not damn likely. Agent Caruthers, take this man into custody and I will investigate his whole story from this end. I’ll believe your story when I see signed authorization.”

Lazarus had been anticipating this and her hesitation. She’d been standing beside him facing the desk. With a side-step, he had his right arm around her neck, a classic jujitsu sleeper hold. She struggled, but he was strong, fast, and precise. Moments later, she was unconscious in his arms. He carefully lowered her onto the couch in the room.

“Deputy Director Samston, SAC Caruthers was taken unawares by a suspect or suspects who approached her from behind.”

“Wha—!” Samston yelled into the phone.

“Samston, you need to understand something. For the most part, the FBI investigates after the fact. Your primary job is to find and convict after the event. After people die. After. People. Die.” Lazarus’ voice was harsh.
